tea leaves, murder and dreaming

being in new york city for summer means three things: tanning/sweating in central park, lots of cold white wine, and lots of lovely live music with the cream of the crop of manhattan's underground music scene... the other night I was at the lovely rockwood music hall (allen st. on the lower east side) for the starling crush set (*and later the poundcake set which was ah-mazin') - a group composed of the talented and stunning jennifer glass and guitarist michael simone. glass does a stunning job of formulating the most feminine of feelings into words - what it is to be lost, scared and alone and finding the beauty in that. glass is a tall, slender stunner with red locks down to forever and a gentle yet vulnerable voice. check out the tracks at www.starlingcrush.com and fall in love with the music, the lyrics, the impact of becoming a "starling crush" what glass defines as: "To be crushed by Starlings, blessed pecking of the relentless need to fly. Crushed by the weight of the freedom. To be a starling, to soar with purpose and strengh… only to crush with the weight of the earth. Calling all skies, calling all clouds to part, calling a crush of the light." (*photo by patti foerster)

son of a gun

carly simon and emmylou harris are not only drop dead talented but they are both drop dead gorgeous.  i love the way that both of these ladies came to embody '70s American female style with their floor length floral dresses, or high-waisted cornflower blue jeans, and their naturally flowing locks... they will always be the quintessential '70s babes in my eyes.

francoise, je t'aime!

francoise hardy is and will always be my style icon.  effortlessly chic, a perfectly androgynous wardrobe, and 100% parisian perfection, i fall in love with every image I see of her...
check out this video and fall in love with her too!

pretty little french girl

The Selby posted photos from art director Julia Restoin Roitfeld's (also the daughter of French Vogue's Ed. in Chief*) gorgeous apartment yesterday and I fell in love with her usage of chic minimalism and her unbelievably ornate mix of rock n' roll and ultra-glamourous accessories... here are some of my favorites:

delphiniums in a window box

I fell in love with this poem from the May 18, 2009 issue of The New Yorker...

Every sunrise, even strangers’ eyes.

Not necessarily swans, even crows,

even the evening fusillade of bats.

That place where the creek goes underground,

how many weeks before I see you again?

Stacks of books, every page, characters’

rages and poets’ strange contraptions

of syntax and song, every song

even when there isn’t one.

Every thistle, splinter, butterfly

over the drainage ditches. Every stray.

Did you see the meteor shower?

Did it feel like something swallowed?

Every question, conversation

even with almost nothing, cricket, cloud,

because of you I’m talking to crickets, clouds,

confiding in a cat. Everyone says,

Come to your senses, and I do, of you.

Every touch electric, every taste you,

every smell, even burning sugar, every

cry and laugh. Toothpicked samples

at the farmers’ market, every melon,

plum, I come undone, undone.

monday dreamboat 2

on this lovely monday morning, another dreamboat is very needed.  besides creating catchy, practically neon dance tunes, donald cumming, the lead singer of the virgins is like a modern day mick jagger: tall, thin, with a slender, defined face and his own personal style and dancemoves.  below i have attached the virgins music video "teen lovers" and beneath that, a promo video for the charlotte ronson clothing line which is just so freakin' darling.  enjoy mr. cumming ladies!

heavenly.

a heavenly photograph and fashion garment and a description of heaven to accompany it:

big city.  overgrown with weeds, but flowering weeds.  on every corner a wrecking crew and something new and crooked going up catty corner to that.  windows missing  in every edifice like broken teeth, gritty wind, and a gray high sky full of ravens.  prophet birds.  piles of trash, but lapidary like rubies and obsidian, and diamond-colored cowspit streamers in the wind.  and voting booths.  and everyone in balenciaga gowns with red corsages, and big dance palaces full of music and lights and racial impurity and gender confusion.   and all the deities are creole, mulatto, brown as the mouths of rivers.  race, taste, and history finally overcome.  - tony kushman

nouveaux commencements

Never did I think I would start my very own blog. But, here I go!
To begin this journey of beautiful images, sounds, feelings, bits, pieces, and musings, I leave you with the famous dancing scene from Jean-Luc Godard's Bande a part, starring the effortlessly stunning Anna Karina.
